Favorite words in songs

Post by Ms Denier »

So many great songs and words...

Wanted to share some a few words to a favorite song of mine. These words are so powerful and have deep meaning to me....

I ain't lookin' for praise or pity
I ain't comin' 'round searchin' for a CRUTCH
I just want someone to talk to
And a little of that Human Touch
Just a little of that Human Touch

Ain't no mercy on the streets of this town
Ain't no bread from heavenly skies
Ain't nobody drawin' wine from this blood
It's just you and me tonight

Tell me, in a world without pity
Do you think what I'm askin's too much
I just want to feel you in my arms
And a little of that Human Touch
Just a little of that Human Touch

This one by Michael Dunford and Betty Thatcher from Renaissance's Album "Camera Camera" always brings tears to my eyes. It is sung by Annie Haslam and it's called:

REMEMBER
-------------
I have her letters
Perfume lingers on every page
Tied with ribbons
Kept with lavender and her lace

The letters are faded
Kept by her side for all her days
And the ribbons
Once held her hair on a younger day

He wrote of the warm spring days
And how tall the grass grew
He wrote of the poppy fields
He said, "tell the children I love them--remember"

There was a poppy
Kept in a frame
By his photograph
The years were so long
They were strong and we must be too

He wrote of the open air
And how brave his friends were
He wrote of the poppy fields
He said, "tell the children of Flanders--remember"

Remember
Susan

I know some things.

One of my favorites, both for what it means, and for what it says it doesn't mean. One thing I love is how Greg Graffin will change the 2nd verse reference to whatever nasty pop star is being pushed on us at the moment they're performing the song.

Bad Religion - No Direction
A sullen figure walks along a dusty road
his life was holy and he couldn't bear the load
he left his people and a simple life behind
he raised his torso and he looked into the sky
shouting his questions
looking for directions
"what do I do now?"

now a confused school girl stares at the TV tray
the stresses of maturing compound every day
she glances up to see her favorite video
and gets ideas from Madonna's nasty clothes
in need of affection
she craves a direction
her heroes offer her

everyone is looking for something
and they assume somebody else knows what it is
no one can live with the decisions of their own
it seems so they look to someone else
to tell 'em what to be
tell 'em what to wear
tell 'em what to say
tell 'em how to act and think and compel others compulsively
until the world is all like them

a righteous student came and asked me to reflect
he judged my lifestyle was politically incorrect
I don't believe in self important folks who preach
no Bad Religion song can make your life complete
prepare for rejection you'll get no direction from me
you'll get no direction from me
you'll get no direction from me

I love the somewhat abstract imagery in Imogen Heap's "Little Bird." It might mean something specific to her but it's impossible for the listener to follow that train of thought so you're forced to find your own.
Little bird, little bird, little bird
What do you hear?
The clink of morning cheers
Orange juice concentrate
Crossword puzzles start to grate
One across
Four letter word, it's just not sitting

Little bird, little bird, little bird
What do you see?
A picture perfect scene
Two toned lawns, manicured
The gardens wearing haute couture

It's hiding something
It's trying too hard
Hiding something
It's trying too hard

Little bird, little bird, little bird
Where are they now?
Daytime TV lounge
A carriage clock, a mantelpiece
A family wiped up, J-cloth clean
Unsaid, festers in the throes of the sofa

Little bird, little bird, little bird
How are you feeling?
Like help in quarantine
Pearly whites, touch down smile
Absent creases round the eyes

Tell tale, hard sell
We smell rats in the kitchen
Tell tale, hard sell
We smell rats in the kitchen

Little bird, little bird, little bird
What can we do?
Think tank think rescue
Simon says, etch a sketch
Some encoded message only he would get
Quickly now
Cause this is not how it ends

Little bird, little bird, little bird
(Little bird, little bird, little bird)
Well I've got one more question
(Little bird, little bird, little bird)
And I swear I'll let it rest
(Little bird, little bird, little bird)
Well I've just one more question
(Little bird, little bird, little bird)
And I swear I'll let it rest

One more question
I'll let it rest
I swear I'll let it rest
Got one more question
(And I swear I'll let it rest)
I've got one more question

Little bird, little bird, little bird
Where have you gone?

Partial lyrics from "Secret" by Oceanlab

You know I know what it means
To be fraying at the seams
Out of my mind

If I tell you a secret
Will you promise to keep it?
Keep it close to your heart
And never tell a soul

Because I have a secret
And its hell trying to keep it
It tears right through my heart
And it swallows me whole

I don't know why
I feel my faith is
On the line

How things appear
Seem to be ever
Unclear
And it feels like me...On a good day

My favorites come in snippets:

"Confusion will be our Epitah"
Epitah by King Crimson

"What a long strange trip it's been"
Trucking by The Greatful Dead

"She used to be so pretty,
now she can't remember her own name"

Crystal Blues by Country Joe and the Fish

"You keep drinking that wine,
Even the grass on your grave will be
Cherry Red"

Cherry Red Wine by Luther Allison

And of course the line that appears in my signature
by Pink Floyd

Zari
everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon

Firefly, firefly
wandering cross the fields by night
Firefly, firefly
wandering cross the fields by night
You know sometimes I feel
Like the sunlight's
much too bright

The twilight's so beautiful
It always makes me smile
The twilight's so beautiful
It always makes me smile
But you, little firefly
Make me forget all lifes trials

When the night has come
And the world has gone to bed
When the night has come
And the world has gone to bed
It's just you and the crickets
To tell the stories in my head

It's a 12 bar minor blues with the chord structure alternating back and forth between minor 7b5 and fully diminished 7 chords in the usual 1 1V V pattern. I wrote the whole thing, my wife sings it beautifully.
everything under the sun is in tune
but the sun is eclipsed by the moon

Given that I seem to be on a music kick at the moment...and given that this song makes me blub on a regular basis! I thought I'd share it with you! Its by Alanis Morissette and its called "Thankyou."

"Thank You"

how bout getting off these antibiotics
how bout stopping eating when I'm full up
how bout them transparent dangling carrots
how bout that ever elusive kudo

thank you india
thank you terror
thank you disillusionment
thank you frailty
thank you consequence
thank you thank you silence

how bout me not blaming you for everything
how bout me enjoying the moment for once
how bout how good it feels to finally forgive you
how bout grieving it all one at a time

thank you india
thank you terror
thank you disillusionment
thank you frailty
thank you consequence
thank you thank you silence

the moment I let go of it was the moment
I got more than I could handle
the moment I jumped off of it
was the moment I touched down

how bout no longer being masochistic
how bout remembering your divinity
how bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out
how bout not equating death with stopping

thank you india
thank you providence
thank you disillusionment
thank you nothingness
thank you clarity
thank you thank you silence
