Grandma's Words of Wisdom

Post by SilverLady(SO) »

The following was written to Dear Abby and printed in the newspaper, although I neglected to record the date - sorry! I am posting the entire 'column' here to give credit where credit is due. - - SL

"Dear Abby: My 99-year old aunt gave me this poem. It was written by my grandmother, Cecile Harris, who was born in 1868.

I call it "Grandma's Words of Wisdom."

For some kind word I do not say
A heart goes lonely on its way.
Those words of praise I do not speak
May make another's courage weak.
My friendly thought I do not share
May leave another in despair.
The words that burn, the hurt that sears
May live to haunt me through the years.
What loads I life, what joy I spread
May live long after I am dead.

My grandma was a wonderful lady. I can recall no unkind comment she ever made. - - Bonnie Thoma, Yuba City, Calif.

Dear Bonnie: Your grandmother not only had a way with words, but she also was a wise woman."

- - What wonderful words to live by!!

Danette - I am sure this grandmother, Cecile Harris, was a very smart lady - but I have absolutely no idea who she is!! I saw this column in the paper and saved it because I believe in what Cecile had to say.

Cecile's poem are truly words to live by!!

Thanks for sharing that with us "SL!"
It is so true, how many times a day are we afforded the opportunity to say something nice to someone, stranger or friend and we don't for whatever reason and we will never know how just a few, kind, postives words could change a person's day!!! Or we may luck out and make a new friend!!!! Can't hurt!!
Love ya,

A friend of mine when I was in the Army had a saying that his Grand Mother used to say to him. "From the time that you were born until they take you away in a Hersh, there aint nothin so bad that it can't get worse" My friend was black so use ebonics when you quote that to yourself when everthing seems to be going wrong.

Are you sure the word was "life" and not "live?"

Just curious.

Good question, Roberta, but I don't know the answer. I typed it verbatim as it was originally published in the Dear Abby column; any typos should be blamed on the newspaper, not me. :?

Knowing "newspapers" the way I do and having been interviewed several times by them, I can accept that answer. hehehe
