As a new member, I've sometimes not logged in because it appeared the site was empty. Users online would appear empty except for bots yet there would be people in chat. Curious as to why?

Hi, Robbie!
The "users online" does not count anyone who may be in the Chat Room as that is a separate software program.
It is always recommended that members regularly log-in as that helps to keep your account 'active'.
