Southern Comfort Conference

Post by Jen S. »

Held in Atlanta, Ga every year. Dates this year are Sept 4th - 8th.

Has anyone here ever attended this event? Trying to work up the courage this year. It's so close to home. Could create some issues if I went out dressed locally and got caught.

You can have several options. You could get a room at the hotel to share with someone (the organizers will have a list of people looking for roomates) and make a mini-vacation of it, or most such conventions have rooms set aside where you could change each day (email the organizers and they will tell you). You can usually leave your change of clothes in a room too, so take a bag/small suitcase, (preferrable locking) and don't leave valuables in the bag if you do the daily bit. There are also services to do your makeup for special events (like the banquet) and they will also teach you how to apply. I did think the services kinda ladled it on, but the contouring and foundation changes your appearance a lot. Be sure you have touch-up makeup because when a lot is used it can get runny in the heat. You can rent or purchase special dresses for the banquet evening too.

I have not been to SCC but did go to BeAllChicago before my transition and surgery, mainly to meet the surgeons. But being with so many people who are so much like you is rather empowering, and I enjoyed meeting people, I stayed the entire week, and had taken a roomate with me and she enjoyed it too. The seminars on things like putting outfits together, make-up for problem areas, and lots of other things, I thought were useful and fun. There are quite a few spouses that attend SCC (I am told), and it is interesting to get their views on things. The most fun is the socializing with people who do not judge but share your interests. There are one or two rooms set aside with drinks (alchohol and non), and munchies. I am sure you will find it a great experience whether you stay in the hotel, a nearby hotel, or go daily if you are near enough.

I envy you your first trip!!! Go, take spare cash, and have fun!!!

Hi Jen
I have been twice, and was hoping I might get to go this year but my schedule is changing and it may not work.

As for the conference it is fun especially if you have never been. there are enough activities at the hotel so you never have to leave if you don't wish to. There are also some group trips to off site restaurants which are fun, they bus you there and back.
There are all kinds of vendors there from wigs all the way down to your shoes. There are ladies there that will do make overs for you. A lot of gils do it on the last night conference to look extra nice for the party.
And all kinds of seminars to choose from covering everything from learning to walk in heels to info SRS.

The best part though is the girls there range from first timers to post-op, so you get to meet a lot of people
all with the same basic interest, dressing up and having fun.
The hotel staff are very friendly and treat us well.

I think you would have a good time, especially if it would be your first time out and about. The SCC staff are wonderful and will do all the can to help you.

As for being recognized, people are not going to be looking for you dressed up/made up, so short of talking to some one you know, you chances of being outed at the conference would be very very minimal.

Hope you can make it.
