I love hats too, though I don't go for the really extravagant "chicken got caught in a rosebush" look.
In the summer I try always to wear a wide brimmed hat whenever I'm outside to avoid sunburn. I burn really easy, so if I don't wear a hat my head will be all red and peeling all summer. NOT attractive AT ALL!!
And in the winter in North Dakota you really really want a hat on your head. Also, before I got extensions I hated the way my hair looked and wanted to hide as much as I could.
At this time of the year it's not so needed, but I still like them
