Pockets vs Purse - what's your preference?

Pockets vs Purse - what's your preference?

Post by Jadeanne »

My wife hates carrying a purse. It seems the only times she does use one is for the very rare formal occasion (she does have several that are gifts/inherited). She doesn't wear makeup so doesn't carry a compact/lipstick/etc.

The only time she usually does wear a skirt/dress/jumper is on Sunday for Church and Sunday School (she teaches a class). She likes to have clothing with pockets for carrying things. When I buy her clothing, I make sure that it has pockets. Her pocketless clothing is steadily going over to Jadeanne's wardrobe (If the skirt/dress/top/jumper/lingerie fits, wear it :) ).

When I get dressed as Jadeanne, I usually DO carry a femme handkerchief, pillbox, etc in a purse. Last Christmas she gave me a gold sequined one that I use most of the time. Sometimes I borrow a different one from her.

Which do you prefer? I hope to get replies from both CDs and GGs.

Purses are nice. When I'm in boy mode (most of the time, unfortunately), my pockets are crowded. I don't have that kind of problem with a purse.

Hi Jadeanne--
When I started going out, it was winter, and I always wore a light coat. So--I had pockets.

When spring came around, and I was starting to go out days, I was suddenly faced with the fact that women's clothes don't have pockets.
Not on the skirts, and not on the blouses.

For some reason, the idea of carrying a purse seemed very radical. Like, it was OK to dress as a woman, but carrying a purse was out of bounds. I had to deal with this silliness, but deal with it I did--I had to have something to carry billfold and keys.

So I went out and found one at a department store close-out. I'm used to it now, and it helps me walk better if I have it tucked under one arm. I don't end up striding like a warrior if I've got a puse that's hitting me when I walk.

Do I prefer it? Not sure about that. It's a pain to have something so valuable separate from you--meaning that you can lay it down and forget it, or have someone snatch it. Part of gal life.

Both.

A purse is awfully handy for the things that I need everytime I walk out the door--wallet, cell phone, keys, coins, hairbrush, etc. Before I carried a purse, I had to jam all that stuff in my pockets, where it bust holes in the pockets, or forget some of it, which I frequently did.

Pockets are very handy for things I'm using at the moment, a kind of rapd-access storage place.

It's nice to have both!

Hi all,

Well, for me, it depends on the occasion. As I've said, I don't go out all that often, but when I do, I still prefer (don't all laugh at the same time, here!) a small knapsack slung over my right shoulder. It's very popular here; a city with four major universities has its share of GG knapsackers, I tell you! Of course, that's in my more relaxed and less "formal" moods. After Carlos Castanedas' Don Juan, who once said that one of the secrets to spiritual happiness is to always keep your hands free (!), I just don't like to carry things in my hands. So clutch purses are out; however, I'll tolerate a shoulder purse. Get this: I even like to carry a Danielle Steel or Rosamund Pilcher novel in there for that extra touch of realism!  (Although, admittedly, most of the GGs I know wouldn't touch those authors with a ten-foot bookmark!)

Love,

Well here is something radical. I have a dress that has (wait for it) pockets. Though I do not go out I do wear this dress around the house. It comes in handy when I want to talk with someone for a long time and use my hands free headset with my phone. But then I need someplace to clip the phone to and that is where the pockets come in.

Hi Jadeanne,

For me it depends on the outfit. :) Meaning, I some outfits (dresses or skirts) call for it and some I'd rather not wear a purse with.

#-o I don't know. #-o

My head hurts. :)

Hi Y'all,

Mixed emotions!! A purse is just great for a lot of "stuff" without looking bulkier than I already am. Another great thing is that you can change outfits without having to take everything out of all your pockets and stuffing the into your new oackets. Then again, carrying a purse does effectively tie up on of your hands and most of us only have two. As a male, I have gotten used to using both of them so tying one up can feel uncomfortable. :-k Still, if I am enfemme, I do prefer to have everything in a purse. We girls do have a lot to carry if we're going to keep looking pretty. @->->-

Hi,
I like a nice purse. Pockets just emit bulges where I would not want them, it messes with my figure. The purse, is to me so practical and sexy. Carry make-up, hair brush, and tissues and sun glasses and lip stick and nail file and on and on and on. The one thing that I would highly recommend is to practice with the purse before you go out. That is actually getting items out of the purse, like your money. Is it loose in the purse or in a "billfold" which is also in the purse? You probably don't need to be fumbling around in your purse for any extended perod of time (if you are trying to pass). If I am going to a movie for example, I try and find out how much the admission is and have the exact amount readily available somewhere easily accessible in the purse. You don't want to be standing in line with people behind you as you spill you purse out all over the sidewalk -or maybe you do - uh dat's a joke folks!? Anyway practice makes perfect. Walk tall, smile and "you go girl!"

I HAVE to carry a purse whether I like it or not. I'm the mother of 10-year old twins and so I have lots of stuff that I need to have with me every time I leave the house. It used to be bigger and carry more stuff when they were babies, so at least I've got it down to a smaller size. Besides, I wear make up to work daily and in my purse are my various lip liners(many colors), lipsticks(same), chap stick, pony tail holders, perfume, check book, daytimer, pens, credit cards, insurance cards for all of us, appointment cards for all of us, hair brush, blush compact, finger nail nippers, nail file and a bunch of other crap. And I never know what I'll need so it all goes with me. It's like lugging around a suitcase but I always buy an expensive purse so it lasts. And always make sure it looks nice, even though it's stuffed to the gills.

When DH and I go out, he always carries one because he tends to sweat like a pig under his wig and needs a compact, tissues and lipstick for freshening up.

Bags, definitely! Having pockets bulging full of stuff ruins the natural lines of an outfit. I have many bags, which can be a pain in the butt changing over the contents, but different outfits require different bags :) . My current favourite is my black Hermes Birkin copy, with a pink lining.
Only trouble is it is on the large side so has a list of contents not dissimilar to Kays, and I can never find anything in it, in a hurry.
My DH has on many occasions had to roll his eyes and shuffle while I fumble for money, cards etc at checkouts  ^^_||

Poor Curly. Poor Ed! It's great to have input from GGs on this, as I've always wondered whether or not they had any opinion on the matter, one way or the other.

Thanks, gals!

Hi Jadeanne,

For me it would have to be a purse, definately.

I have been using a purse since I was around 9 yrs. old. I remember getting my very first purse, I felt like such a little lady. I couldn't wait to have one.
Like Curly mentioned, I feel, stuffing my pockets ruins the lines of an outfit (I don't want to look lumpy)

There are times (at a water park or a dance club, etc.) when I don't take my purse along and just take the bare necessities (driver's license & lip stick), but I always feel that I'm missing something when I don't have it, like I left my right arm at home. I just don't feel "right" without my purse hanging over my shoulder.

Plus, I don't "check" pockets before I do the laundry, so I would ruin many things as I have with my kids, they are always leaving things in their pockets #-o

Beauty,

I'm not sure I can help answer your question but here goes, I notice when my hubby has held my purse the thing I notice is a lack of "confidence" or should I say, he "looks" like he feels uncomfortable using one.

It's like if a GG doesn't normally wear heels, except for the rare wedding, etc., it is very noticable (to me) that she doesn't know how to walk very well in them and hasn't worn them very often. I think the same applies for wearing a purse, just wear a purse more often and then you will feel more confident and comfortable with having one, after a while you won't even notice you are wearing one, but you will miss it if you aren't.

I hope this helps you a bit :)
