I would say wherever you decide is ok as long as you stay safe and are comfortable. Perhaps having your girlfriend with you for a drive would be a prudent first step. That comfort level needs to be pretty high before you brave the shopping crowds because until you get really comfortable going out, one's confidence can be pretty fragile. Above all though, take it slowly and have fun.
