This is an excellent article and details the dilemma many face. For most the loss of a job means their transition may be even more difficult if not impossible. I was fortunate in having the resources to transition as well as having been offered a buyout when my longtime employer was sold to another company. Looking back I know there was no way I could have transitioned working for a conservative German company.

IMHO the time has come for a law to give and protect the rights of the TG community. Sadly we are a minority within a minority and most LGBT organizations are too wrapped up in the same sex fight to give any time or resources to this issue.

I am not so much worried about losing my job as I am about the reactions from my co-workers.
Will the men be afraid that I mean something different when I am touchy-feely with them?
Will they stop their homophobic remarks as I find them offensive, because I don't exactly feel like a stereotypical alpha male?
Will the women accept me as one of them, or will they treat me as an imposter?
A sensitivity class might be in order..

Having transitioned on the job this article hit home. When I did it was 1980 and things were a lot different back then. heck Al Gore hadn't even invented the internet yet so there was a real void in information available to the general population. I was lucky having an awesome employer who saw me, and everyone else for that matter, as just a person and was one of my biggest supporters. After I told him of my plans he called all the employees together, we were a small company of only 11 people then, and not only told them of my plans but also told them anyone who has an issue with it to clean out their desk! Yes I still thank God every day for the support and love he gave to me.

My dear friend Deidre has it right the time has come for a TG bill of rights. IMHO we really need a true equal rights amendment to the Constitution guaranteeing equal rights and protections to all. No exceptions, no loopholes, just everyone is equal! Sadly our current Congress, as well as many in recent memory can't even agree what day of the week it is. The day will come for this "fantasy" of mine and others to happen, probably not in my lifetime but someday!
