Ode to the Worm

Post by Violet »

I've been feeling somewhat more depressed than usual lately (Yule-tide always brings this on in me) and so I've decided to take up poetry again as a means of catharsis. Submitted for your consideration: my first effort (in 5+ years anyway), 'Ode to the Worm'.

The Worm that lies coil'd at the base of the skull
And whispers of anger and fear
That speaks of regret over deeds undone
Murmurs of guilt over battles unwon
As venom it pours in your ear.

The Worm that lies coil'd at the base of the skull
And speaks of destruction and death
That pauses on bridges and tells you to fly
Tells you that nothing is lost when you die
As poison it blows in your breath.

The Worm that lies coil'd at the base of the skull
And whispers of hurt and disease
That asks you to try it, what harm could it do?
If life is just pain, why not abdicate you?
As living and feeling it flees.

The Worm that lies coil'd at the base of the skull
And speaks of revenge and decay
That urges to hurt them before they hurt you
To loosen the rage that is seething in view
As it pushes to slaughter and slay.

The Worm that lies coil'd at the base of the skull
Of the demon you'll never be rid
The hag-riding beast you but keep on a leash
Panting for void, for succor and surcease
From the agony proving you live.
