A word game . . .

Post by Celia »

. . . and, no, this doesn't belong in The Gaming Place.

This is a little like anagrams. In the following, rearrange the letters in bold to form a meaningful word: quagmire.

I think there's only one outcome, but if you can come up with another . . . . :-k

That's the only one I've seen, too, Sharon - though I suppose there are 23 other possibilities (maybe a good Scrabble dictionary would serve). :)

Well, you can't get 23 words out of four letters.

I believe the puzzle is to leave the u, g, m, e in letter order but use
q, a, i, r in any order and between any of the other letters.

Celia’s instruction was to try to make words out of the letters in bold type (i.e., q, a, i, and r).  And she said the rules were like those of anagrams (that is, we have to keep all the letters — otherwise, such words as “I” and “air” would be solutions).  Below are the 24 logical possibilities. I think Sharon(SO) is correct.

QAIR
QARI

QIRA

AQIR
AQRI
AIQR
AIRQ

I'm not sure but there may be other real words in there somewhere, just not English words. Iraq may be the only one we recognize. Does anyone know any of the languages from that area of the world?

Just for clarification, the possibilities I was referring to were permutations on the set of letters {q, a, i, r}: 4 first choices X 3 second choices X 2 third choices X 1 fourth choice = 24 permutations (Jamie Ann had the right idea). I didn't think very many would be English words, considering how few have a q but no u. I've just scanned a couple of internet listings of q words without a u (related to scrabble and other word games), but not one word listed in these uses the exact letters (Iraq doesn't count in scrabble). There might be something in a non-English language, though. :)
