Buyer beware Shoe Carnival Stores

Post by Carolynn »

My friend Tracy bought two pair of shoes at Shoe Carnival in OKC last week. She decided one pair did not match properly the outfit she bought them for, so she took them back. One pair was 50.00 and the other pair was 16.00. She was taking back the more expensive of the pair. The clerk pulled out paper to show her that they could only give her the price of the lesser cost in refund, so she gave her $16.00 rather than the $50.00 that the returned shoes cost. Tracy was stunned, and instead of keeping the shoes and leaving, she took the money and left in a huff, leaving the shoes behind. In effect they made 34.00 dollars plus they got the shoes back in unworn condition to resell. This returns policy is not posted anywhere that I could see.

I dunno, it may just be me, but does that seem like fraud or highly unethical to any of you? I feel that Shoe Carnival is a rip off joint and does not deserve patronage.

Just be aware. If you are going to buy something at a Shoe Carnival store, beware. Don't plan on returns unless you buy one pair at a time so you can get your money back. You should also insist in seeing their return policy in writing and with a copy in your purse when you leave to make sure you get your money back without some kind of "restocking" fee. .

Not only is this practice unethicial, it is also unlawful in most states. A stores return policy is supposed to be posted in a visable area so customers can read and understand how the store handles returns, this includes any restocking fee.

Your friend made a big mistake in accepting the money they offered instead of insisting for a full refund. In doing so she accepted their policy and may have no recourse in getting a total refund from that store. She should have taken the shoes back and informed the store manager that she was going to contact the Consumer Affair Dept., Attorney General and the media in your state of this fraud. That alone may have gotten her all her money back because stores do not like that kind of attention brought to the publics attention.

She still might be able to do so if she chooses and get some recourse even though she accepted what they offered her.

Shoe Carnival has gone out of business here in Central Texas. I never had a problem with them but evidently they had a problem here.
