It seems to have a number of possible meanings. For example, a red front door seems to have some sort of Feng Shui significance - welcome, I think. But it seems to have other meanings as well, depending on religion or ethnicity. I Googled "red front door" and got 857,000 hits.

A number of years ago, back in WV, I painted the front doors to our church red. Everyone liked it, except the priest. ***huh***

If I recall, red is the color for luck in the Chinese culture. Years ago, I found this site before it went commercial. There is some (not much) free info left on it; see http://www.colorvoodoo.com/.

I'm curious, why the question? I would not have just thought that it meant anything more than a liking for red front doors

Paula, there's a history to it. It was nearly twenty five years ago, so I don't remember the exact details of it, but I remember reading about it when we bought our house. In colonial America it was the common practice. Most front doors were red. I think it was a welcoming thing, but that's the part I'm not clear about. Anyway, since Massachusetts is a colonial state, and we have an older house, we decided to honor the custom, with a variation of red, which I have reapplied several times since.

Maybe the doors were red back then for the same reason barns are red?

Many Episcopal churches have red doors. Not sure the reasoning for it but have heard it was tradition when we discussed it last at church. No one knew the basis for the tradition.

Our front door was red when we bought the house and remains that way.

Red being a striking color maybe it's a way of calling attention to the entry.
