Browser Battles

Hi all,

I noticed in another thread that Alexandra's Netscaping now. Although I've never used anything other than Microsoft's Internet Explorer, I'll admit to being very curious about the Opera browser. Does anyone here use it? If so, what's your opinion? Thanks for any input.

Love,
CJ

I tried Opera some time back, CJ. When I did, you had a choice between a free version (adware, with a static banner ad) and a paid version. Naturally, I tried the free version (Internet Explore is free; Netscape is free; why would I want to start paying?). It seemed serviceable, but I didn't give it a terribly thorough evaluation; so I'm afraid I never personally saw whether Opera lived up to its reputation for features and configurability--probably others could give you a better sense of it. In any case, there's plenty of buzz about the browser on the web, much of it quite favorable.

For about a year or so, I relied on Internet Explorer (with its display-related bugs and on-going security crises) exclusively. Then I heard some good press on Mozilla, the open-source browser on which newer versions of Netscape are based. I downloaded it and started using it. It's not by any means perfect (it's slow to load and has some other quirks as well) but it has a couple of features that have led me to use it much of the time instead of Internet Explorer: integrated popup blocking and tabbed browsing.

To be fair, there are third-party add-ons to Internet Explorer that block popups; but, of course, these are third-party add-ons: I have to find them, concern myself with whether or not they're free, worry about a separate installation step and possible compatibility issues, etc. Mozilla's popup blocking is integrated and preconfigured--I never see popups (if anything, Mozilla might be a little too thorough in this regard ^^_|| ). The other feature, tabbed browsing, simply has me hooked: this is where Mozilla leaves Internet Explorer in the dust (did I say Mozilla? Except for Internet Explorer, most browsers, Opera included, have a tabbed browsing feature; Opera has integrated popup blocking as well). Microsoft has been resting on its laurels. I think you'll be pleased with some of the web-browsing alternatives out there--give 'em a try. :)

Yours,
Celia

CJ, it was quite easy to download Netscape (just ignore when they ask for a username and stuff -- you can do this later if you want) then click on the little icon and go surfing like you do with IE. Your IE browser will still be there. In fact I used both to open 2 surfing windows at the same time (broadband here).

I was having problems with IE and after Beauty helped me straighten it out, the problems resurfaced on restart so I downloaded Netscape and those problems were history . . .

Hi all,

Big-time thanks for the input! :) I'll look more closely at some of the suggestions. Both Mozilla and Firefox are appealing. I use MSIE 6.0.2 along with the Google Toolbar's ability to block pop-ups. One concern I have is the matter of compatibility; everything on my computer is Windows- or Microsoft-based, and I've worked hard to update and fix both the OS and the browser. Yet, these days, I feel as though I'm navigating the online waters in a leaky canoe with a Swiss cheese paddle.

Again, thanks to all.

Love,
CJ

CJ,

You can count me as primarily a Mozilla (currently ver 1.6) user for most websites - I have run into a very few websites that seem to work better for me with Internet Explorer 6.

I'm running Windows ME on my desktop computers and Mozilla works just fine with it.

The built-in popup blocker works really well, and the tabbed browsing ROCKS! I almost always have this forum in one tab then I can easily cruise to any link by clicking on it with the scroll wheel button on my mouse.

I'm currently switching between this forum and two different shopping sites on different tabs.

Give Mozilla a try - you'll like it.

Hi all,
CJ, only you! would use a cheesy paddle with a holey canoe.

Hmmm, from the looks of this thread, I may have to do some experimenting to do. This looks really interesting.

Thanks, CJ for asking the question. Thanks Girls, for the informative response!

Hugs,
Kyra

Julie not to bust your bubble but you had it backwords Netscape is based on Mozilla. I have tried Mozilla Firefox not bad it is better then what Mozilla has been IMO. I still use IE mainly though. It truley is what I call a Pepsi/Coke choice.

If I only get one vote, it would be for Mozilla. I have concerns RE MSIE lack of security. However, many sites will incorrectly and arrogantly tell me that I have an old version of what ever, and must upgrade to MSIE or Netscape X.XX to do whatever. So, I keep IE and Netscape 7.2 around for when I absolutely must use one of them. But I like Mozilla best.

Hugs,

Bernice

Hi all,

Bernice,

That's precisely one of my concerns; many sites insist on either MSIE or Netscape, and having multiple browsers installed on my computer makes me slightly nervous (in that, these are massive programs that often modify system files). So far, MSIE has never given me any problems (however, as I've said, I've had to work at constantly patching it up). From all that's been said here, though, I think I will actually give Mozilla a try.

Thanks again for all your input. You gals are wonderful! :)

Love,
CJ
