How's Da Man?

Post by Beauty »

This is a movie Who's The Man I found out about when looking for an image on the web. (Odd, huh?)

http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/19/19_hkgender.html

I've ordered it, but it won't be released for DVD until May 25th 2004.

I'll report about it when I get a chance to view it. :)

I ordered/rented the movie "All About My Mother" :)

The Hedwig movie seemed to be very similar to "Priscilla Queen Of The Desert" am I close or is it really worth seeing?

Hi Beauty,

It's about an aspiring rock star who went the SRS route but the surgeon left behind an inch, hence the name. I only watched parts of "Priscilla" so I can't really compare the movies.

"Sorority Boys" anyone? LOLOL!!!

Although a pretty stupid premise (even for a comedy) and looney in other ways (typical Hollywood idioticy), I DID enjoy this one LOLOL!!! Some of the CDing girls did look kind of cute and it does go into some of the problems trying to "look like a girl", also the movie is generally upbeat and surprisingly touches on some moral issues positively. I bought a pre-viewed copy in the bargain bin and its fun to watch from time to time (just scan through the so-so parts). Not a top 25 movie, but you'll remember this one.

Ma Vie En Rose

Post by Beauty »

Hi,

I can't believe I'd never seen or even heard about this movie. It was absolutely the best TG'd movie I've ever seen.

Most movies start @ adulthood. This one is completely about a TG'd child's life (7 years old).

"Ma Vie En Rose" is the name of the movie and I liked it so much I ordered it. It made me remember all of the questions I asked myself when I was younger w/o have the feelings about boys.

The movie is really for TS's, but I felt I related to it quite a bit anyway. The relationship she had with her mom was similar to mine too. Even the not so good times.

The actress who is the mom is FABULOUS, but I'd be doing the movie and injustice if I took out any single piece. It was excellent as a whole.

If you do rent it via Netflix or something, please let me know if you liked it. I think there's parts in it for everyone who is under the TG'd umbrella.

A movie that has slipped my mind until now is the movie "Bruno". It stars Shirley MacLaine, Gary Sinese and Kathy Bates. It was written my MacLaine.

The story is about a boy who likes to dress like a girl. MacLaine plays his hard nosed grandmother and Sinese his embarassed father. The main character, Bruno, is about 8 years old and is beautifully played by Alex Linz. He does such a phenomenal job in this movie it just sucks you in. The way he presents his crossdressing is priceless. I highly recommend it.

Hi Julie,

I'm kind of wondering if I saw that one. Does the little boy impersonate Diana Ross all the time and he gets picked on in school? Is he like always dancing like her and playing music in the house?

Let me know because I want to rent it, but I know I've seen a movie that sounds similar.

Thanks! :)

Has anyone seen The Iron Ladies??

If you like seeing straight backside get kicked, then stand up and cheer for the real-life, campy tale of Thailand’s Iron Ladies. An almost entirely gay/transgender-comprised volleyball team, the Iron Ladies took the 1996 national male volleyball championships, winning the public’s hearts and creaming some ignorant hetero butt in the process. Youngyooth Thongkonthun’s colorful, zippy and rousing dramatization of their story made box-office records in its home country as well. While the some of the acting seems overdone and the script is quite campy, this is the way films are made in Thailand.

Talented player Mon is considered an outcast because of his being gay. Mincing best friend Jung has experienced the same ostracism. So when a lesbian, Coach Bee, is selected by the local government to assemble a winning team, the two try out and are accepted. As all but one heterosexual refuse to play alongside such nelly outcasts, Bee asks Mon if he can find a few friends to fill the team – which he does. This includes Pia, a glamorous transsexual cabaret star; Nong, a gay army sergeant; and Wit, a closeted-to-his-family Chinese/Thai boy. Of course, most teams dismiss Bee’s team, but soon they’re heading towards the championships. Unfortunately, some more conservative officials don’t know if that should happen, and place some roadblocks in the way. Can our pink players overcome these obstacles in addition to increasingly formidable challengers?

In what seems a peculiar move, the director purposely opted to cast only heterosexual actors as the leads (with the exception of real-life transsexual Benjathikoon as Pia) so that audiences in Thailand wouldn’t be “focusing on the gayness of my cast.” Yet they seem pretty gay anyway, having taken lessons directly from the real-life Iron Ladies, who are seen during the closing credits-- be sure to stick around. Hi Beauty!

The boy is a wiz at spelling and enters spelling bees and wins one after the next propelling him to state and national competition. All the while he wants to dress in feminine attire. At one point early in the movie his grandmother, Shirley MacLaine, asks him why he wants to be a girl.

He says, "I don't want to be a girl."

"Then why do you want to wear girl's dresses?" she asks

"They're not dresses, they're vestments of power."

She looks at him and asks him to explain so he tells her all through the ages powerful people have always worn gowns. He sites emperors, kings and even Christ. Grandma begins to warm up to him but tells him people will want to beat him up if he continues to wear dresses. He says in a very innocent but firm manner, "I don't care"

Well that's all this tough as nails woman had to hear. She was impressed with his bravery. What happens next is priceless.

My wife loved it and even my 18 year old son liked it (that was before THE DISCOVERY)

Hi,

I decided to bump this up because of Xenia's question about movie reviews for TG'd "stuff".

Hi Nicole,

You are so right. The mom was really good too. Actually everyone in the whole movie was awesome, but that child actor portrayed the way we felt when we were young so well.

I ordered the movie and sent it to my mom. I told her that if she watched this movie she'd see how I felt when I was a child. I just asked her to replace the gender of the child the main character had a crush on and that was the way I felt. She watched it and I think it helped. After she watched it she called me and asked me if that's how I felt growing up. I told her yes and she apologized over and over and I told her not to. I told her I thought it was all in my head or there was something wrong with me. I told her she did the best she could and I wasn't open with her, so there's no way she could have known.

It was still cool that the movie not only touched me and so many TG'd people, but that it brought me even closer to my mom.

I thought I might have posted my reviews here, but I didn't see them.
Here's a few I've seen and have...

The Dress Code - was mentioned already. This is the "vestments fo power" movie. I want a copy of that one. My wife, daughter and I all saw it one night. I choked a bit when I discovered what it was about because my wife and I were still a bit on edge about my CDing and our daughter finding out. I honestly didn't know what the movie was going to be about when I rented it.

OOPS! I just went to find the movies and discovered I have The Dress Code

Just Like A Woman - This is set in the U.K. and it's about a male crossdresser. He finds himself divorced and living in a boarding house.
His life from then on with work, the police and his landlady is pretty realistic seeming to me. It's a good movie and treats the CD issue with respect, albeit more sexy than some of us find it...

Girls Will Be Girls - This is a flashy, somewhat raunchy movie about three girls. I'm still not sure if the subjects of the film were supposed to be men in drag/tv's/ts. One of the best parts of the DVD is when they show how they made the guys up into their characters. Interesting!

Ma Vie En Rose(My Life In Pink) - This one tears me up everytime I watch it!
I really want my wife to see it as well as our daughter. I'm not sure I could watch it with either of them though. It's very powerful! At least to me.
This is about a young boy who believes he should be a girl...God's mistake!...and how his family and the people around him react to it all.

Hi all,

I was a teenager when I saw the film Cambio de Sexo with Almodovar mainstay, Victoria Abril, in the main role. It played here, in Montreal, as I Want To Be A Woman, in Spanish with English subtitles.

The story focuses on a Spanish teen (who was the same age I was at the time!) as he embarks on a transsexual odyssey. I remember the film being very dark and bleak (mostly because of what he had to suffer at the hands of those around him). Personally, I don't think Ms. Abril successfully managed to convince us as a boy but I suspended disbelief anyway. I guess I wanted to recognize myself in the character.

I don't remember what the film's rating is, but I do know that, again, at the time, I found that some parts of it were harsh, some were embarrassing, and others just went way over my head. I'd have to see it again, now that I'm (mostly) an adult.

Love,
CJ
