Need Recommendations on Choosing a Formal Gown

Post by Martha G »

I would like to get me a formal gown for special events and parties.

I am about 5'6" tall, compactly built an weight around 200 lbs.

I do make an attractive and passable woman and want something that looks very lovely and feminine. Nothing outlandish.

I have been acquainted with large hoop skirts for costume parties, but want something modern and not historical.

How about some ideas ladies.

Thanks as always for your help.

Martha,
Go to a department store and let the sales ladies help you. Not sure there are a lot of gowns out now, but spring has weddings... Also try places like David's Bridal. They will have all kinds of choices and a very helpful staff. Got drab the first time; they will be just fine with you.

Sadly, I think you will need a tailor to get everything to fit right. What's the average height of a woman now anyway? You're gonna need heels or flats depending on what you expect the wear under the gown so they get the length right.

Thanks Davita.

There is a David's Bridal Shop out my way. My costumer has made several historical dresses for me with all the necessary hooped petticoats and bloomers. But too expensive to have a gown with underparts made from scratch.

Hopefully I will go as Martha and see some really beautiful choices. They can measure me right there and possibly do the tailoring.

However my costumer could do additional tailoring if need be.

I would love to do a strapless but have muscular shoulders with a lot of hair. I can handle the hair but not the shoulders.

Just about how 'formal' do you need to be? There are jacket dresses available though most stores and catalogs that may suitable to attend a wedding. A jacket looks so elegant and covers the arms and shoulders. Mature women rarely do off the shoulder fashions unless their skin is flawless or they have no shame.
