Personally I have never worn leggings to work but I have thought about it and have seen other women wear them with an appropriate top. This article raises the question and IMO addresses in a very professional way.

I'd say it depends on how you look in them and how they look.
I see some women in flesh colored leggings that look horrible. Others I see wear leggings that are pretty and look good.

Even though we do Casual Friday at work I would never think of wearing leggings to work. I love leggings and probably live in them at home, especially on Saturdays', but they have a place and IMO it is not the appropriate attire for work.

I suppose it really does depend on your work environment, company culture and dress code.

Some companies have strict dress codes (IE: women are to wear heels, skirt, blouse and jacket) while others are more relaxed.

In a more relaxed environment, I don't see any issue with wearing leggings to work. As long as they are appropriately paired with a longer top or tunic, then why not?

Besides, some styles are thicker - more like a pant than leggings. These are usually advertised as being "work appropriate". They are much more professional looking than the typical thin leggings fabric that most of think of.

I tend to agree with Sarah here but Emma does raise some interesting points. Yes there is a difference in leggings and the generally cheaper ones, note I did not say less expensive because price does not always equate quality, are not appropriate anywhere! I have seen some leggings that are sheerer than some tights I have. To me those are not appropriate anywhere outside of your house. I would suppose in an extremely casual business setting they would be OK however I am at a loss to think of a single think instance of one and it is certainly none that has any interaction with the general public. Perhaps on a Saturday when you go into the office for a few hours to catch up on things but not during normal business hours.

That said I love leggings and around the house or just out running around they are warm and comfortable and can be stylish when paired with an appropriate length top. In other words ladies, cover your butt!

No, they are not appropriate attire in of themselves as a type of pant or leg covering alone, for work in any professional job.

I find it oddly funny at how many women will cry out as to pantyhose or tights being uncomfortable, BTW not true if one buys a good brand (no it does not have to be pricey either) and more so of appropriate size (Yes ladies MANY OF YOU ARE QUEEN SIZE IN PANTYHOSE AND TIGHTS, NOT SIZE A OR B) and fit to them, but they will pull on leggings that are heavier in weight and less breathable, less stretchable than even the heaviest of fashion and denier tights.

Leggings with an appropriate skirt or a loose fitting/flowing and appropriate dress are ok as they are then just an accessory but sorry to say today in much of especially the western world 70-75% of women are too heavy to wear leggings as a type of pant or leg covering alone and they look awful on more obese women, facts don't lie. Even many of us CDers and TGers if our weight is not in check to our body height, they look just as bad.

If someone wants to laze away at home on a Saturday or Sunday wearing such well then who cares? But I when most every day out and about am disappointed in how crappy both genders often dress and present themselves today. It is really no more difficult, nor uncomfortable to properly dress in proper fitting clothes be it casually, semi-formal or formal than it's to dress as if you just rolled out of bed or worse out from a BFI bin. It's simple laziness, lack of self-respect and an I don't care attitude that has too many people of both genders dress like crap today.

I suppose I am in the minority here, but as I had mentioned, I think that leggings is totally fine at work - if company culture allows.

At my work, all the office women wear leggings from time to time. Always appropriately paired with a longer top which has inspired my outfit choices on more than one occasion! Long tunic sweater, long necklace with a heavier legging and tall boots... a two minute outfit that can look very nice IMO!

The girls on the shop floor wear leggings too, but usually with a short tee... again, fine given the environment. It can look trashy, at times - but hey, this is a small manufacturing company, not a Bay St. office building, LOL!

During the summer months, I cycle to work, and at the end of summer, when the evenings get cooler, I will wear a pair of cycling leggings to keep warm for the ride home.
This has resulted in discussions with the office girls about the various materials used, and styles etc for the cycling leggings. It is always in good fun, and during Friday night drinks, It has been suggested more than once that I should just wear a ladies top over the leggings while at work. I have always laughed this off, but just quietly, if dared, I wouldn't say no.

I agree with you Emma, I'm pretty much in the if it feels good to wear and everything is covered then go for it camp.

As a retired office manager I would say no to any employee either asking if or coming in wearing leggings. There are some whose physique would look good in them, but then you get the other that THINK they would look the same as Stan Stunning or Betty Beautiful, but dont!

Go with the herd mentality here but even before that I would have agreed...No. What was that country song about Badonk Badonk! If you are at your correct weight and with a long flowy top maybe but really they are only for certain ladies in certain settings which are at home or very casual. Certain sports like jogging or riding a bike...

I love leggings and to be honest I wear them maybe too much but always with a longer top to hide my backside from prying eyes. However I can't think of a single instance where I would consider them appropriate for work unless you are a yoga instructor. Yes I have seen women wearing them while working and I think to myself what were they thinking? Or maybe a better question is were they thinking?

I don't know how many of you are old enough to remember the old broadcaster Paul Harvey but he always had an interesting slant and opinions. I remember him once commenting on the growing trend of corporate casual and said

In the business/work world, especially if you may work with paying clients/public or if higher up superiors work around or near you, remember you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Be you a CDer/TGer. a regular dude or a typical gal, dress appropriately for your field of work.

This whole casual stuff at work has spread like a cancer over the last 15-20 years and is simply UNPROFESSIONAL!

If I'm a paying customer and maybe spending/investing thousands of dollars, the staff/sales or management person(s) trying to secure a sale or investment dresses like they are about to cut the lawn or do an oil change on a car or just dresses like he/she rolled out of a BFI bin, WHY SHOULD THEY GET MY MONEY!?!?! They have little self-respect by how they dress, shave, do/style hair, makeup etc. etc. They by first impressions leave me great doubt to spend or invest my money with them.

ON TOP OF THAT! If you dress appropriately for your work YOU will likely do a better job by having more self-respect.

Recently I saw how terrible this casual dressing crap is when I had to take my dad to the local hospital for a not too serous issue but one we felt should be looked at. We could not tell a nurse from an orderly/cleaner or other technician BY THEM ALL WEARING THEM WRINKLY, GAWD AWFUL SCRUBS! They all may as well be wearing P.J.s

AND THE DAMN DOCTORS! NO BETTER!! Ratty polo shirts, or wrinkly collared shirts, scruffy jeans and more than a few in scruffy running shoes. Seven damn years of Med school but by first impression to look like homeless bums.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS WORKS! IT BUILDS CUSTOMER/CLIENT CONFIDENCE AS A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION!
