Payless Shoes is calling it quits. Although I don't shop there anymore I can remember doing so, both drab and en femme and I believe most girls have shopped at Payless at one time or another. Liquidation sales start tomorrow so be early before your size sells out

Ahhhhhh. I love Payless and they were always good to me shopping in there.

All I can say is shopping online may be cheaper, but if you want to keep brick and mortar stores we need to shop in them. I personally prefer to shop in person and try on when I need to.

I agree with Kim. Nothing like seeing and feeling what you get before you pay for it. No telling what you'll get buying online!

Though I've bought a few things at Payless and DSW from time to time, they weren't my favorite places. Sure, the prices were really cheap but so was the quality. But I'm really fussy about my shoes, and prefer to go to Bulgaria for shoes.
My take on them going under is that, having a business model based on having lower prices than anyone else, is probably a bad idea.

The big issue I think for Payless shoes is the fact that Shopko went out of business. Every Shopko store I went in for the last 10 years has has Payless shoes in them. So not sure they were in every Shopko store but I know many of them. So suddenly loosing that many stores can not be a good thing. And my guess the Payless stores in Shopko were a good thing for Payless.

Kind of funny you mention Shopko Kim. There is one in the town I live in which is closing which is a shame as there is nothing close to it locally but that is another story. TBH I have never bought shoes there and had no idea they were Payless. I have looked at some of the name brand casual shoes such as Nike or Skeechers however even on sale they are more expensive than other places within an hour's drive so never bought anything at Shopko.

One point here is if we do not support he local brick and mortar stores they are slowly but surely die replaced with Wally World or similar. I am as guilty of looking to Amazon for certain things as many however when it comes to things such as clothes or shoes or even purses I like to be able to touch and feel.

Well on that subject Diana, I'm not sure Shopko and Payless are any different than Wally World. It's not like any of them are locally owned "mom and pop shops". All of them just sell cheap plastic stuff from China, same as Amazon.

So I actually do buy my shoes at a small local shop here, and make it a point to look for real leather preferably made in USA. And one brand I really like is SAS, which they carry. Last time I was in there though, I spent $400. I got 2 pair of really really cute boots, and two other pair shoes so I was happy and $100 on average for good quality foot wear is not bad at all. A woman I work with was telling me yesterday that she buys most of hers from Zappo, so maybe I'll check that out but probably not because I like to try them on first. And my store is next to Dress Barn anyway so that makes it a lot more convenient than shopping online.

You are correct Ralista Shopko, Payless, even Wally World are not local "mom and pop" stores but they do represent in some cases the slow death of brick and mortar stores. I do tend to patronize certain types of local small stores and shops for certain things such as fresh vegetables, meats, fresh baked goods, even certain personal items I am as guilty as most in I do the bulk of my grocery shopping at a chain as they have a large selection at good prices, shop for dresses and other apparel at larger department stores as they have a better selection of sizes and styles, even shop DSW and Zappo's for shoes and boots for selection as well as prices.

The days of the small locally store for things like clothes, groceries, even hardware have come and gone as the chains have almost cornered the market. There is still room for the smaller locally owned store but they have to be more specialized. IMO they can and still do compete when it comes to things like bakeries, vegetable stands, butcher shops, even auto repair. They have to find their niche and use it to their advantage.

All that said I and I am certain most of you girls have at least shopped at Payless at one time or another even if you never bought anything. The retail marketplace has changed and whether you agree with it or not it is a sign of changing times and attitudes. Payless like others that have preceded it into no longer as the ones that will follow it didn't adapt.
