I read Rik's subject and thought the title really suited my experience, I hope you do not mind my borrowing it.
Today I simply had to go shopping. Usually I would be very cautious but today I was ready to be more daring. I first phoned to one clothing shop if they would mind a man trying female clothing. The response was a very friendly 'of course you can', so that gave me an extra boost. I dressed as a man but put on a pair of flesh colored stay-up stockings and sandals, just for the experience.
In the shop I couldn't really find what I was looking for so I continued visiting every clothes shop in the same town.
In one shop I found a very light and colorful skirt which was exactly what I wanted, but unfortunately it did not have the right size( , I thought). So I asked the saleslady if they had a larger size. She asked what size my wife usually takes and not wanting to lie,I replied that it was in fact for me. She first smiled and than added that due to different size units the skirt might fit. I then asked if she would mind me trying it and she said 'not at all', 'you might find it more comfortable using the men's dressing boot however'. In the dressing boot I just had the skirt on when I heard that she came to check if everything was going well. I replied that I feared the skirt might be too large and I just opened the curtain and asked what she thought. For her the size was just good and she said 'I thought you were yoking, but you really mean it'. I answered that it was maybe strange but she could see it as a 'hobby'. 'No problem with me, in fact I know another crossdresser frequently passing by',she replied. Since she was so helpful I asked if she would find me a blouse or top to go with the skirt, which she did with real interest. When paying for the two items she invited to come as much as I wanted.
After that I continued visiting other shops, I tried 4 dresses and one trouser and called it a day.

Earlier I had a like experience when I was in a lingerie shop and asked a saleslady if they had 'gel bra inserts". She took me from the back of the shop to the front were the cash desk was with several people standing there to pay , and she started to give me an explanation on the various possibilities of "breast enhancers" and showing on her own breasts what the effect would be of the one or the other form. I finished by buying a "full cup" breast enhancer (for 32€). For some reason or another this experience got me in an excellent mood afterwards and I even went back to the shop the day after to give them a small present.

sounds like a fun experience. it sounds like you handled yourself well. I dunno why bout most things I'm really laid back and can laugh at but I dunno if I was buying something and they asked if it was for my boyfriend I'd say no it was for me but i think a slight sneer would cross my face and when she said you weren't kidding I'd have some remark on the tip of my tongue about how not everyones is as boring in their dress sense as her. No clue why probably its not her reaction which was as you say lovely from a person its cas shes a shop assistant and hence should be prepared for any sales prediciment with a customer and never make assumtions of a customers tastes always aim to make them comfortable. I think its cas its her job that i find her reaction funny but silly.
sales assistance should act by trying to make a sale not based on their own assumptions.
actually i probably would have laughed at her.
but as a person her reaction seemed lovely and helpful and am glad you had a fun time.
