TBS will embarrass us

Post by Barbara »

Beginning October 12, TBS will air a new "reality" show called "He's a Lady" in which 11 men will compete to see who can become the best woman.

I, for one, will NOT be watching. According to what I've read, this smacks of forced feminization, which I do not approve of. The men signed on for this show believing they would be involved in e machismo-testing competition called "All-American Man". (I also disapprove of deceit.) The fact that these men agreed to go on after learning of the deceit does not alter my opinion one bit.

it's not so much the forced feminism that I object to, more the 'lets poke fun at guys who dress as girls' that annoys me.
reality shows are all about cheap thrills and tend to be aimed at low brow viewers and voyeurs. (apologies for any of you who watch big brother etc, but I really do feel such shows lack in morals, culture and entertainment.)
And you thought I was dead.

Another good point, Eloise. It's also my understanding that these men's SO's were in on the joke from the start. The only thing that would make this show worthwhile (she said, tongue firmly planted in cheek) is if at least one of the guys looks better than his SO and/or decides to continue CDing long after the show is finished.

I so agree..... although I will watch as it's important to understand how the media is portraying cross-gender activity.....

This will be worse then Springer....

I really hope they don't make this into a circus. We all know how these reality shows operate. :?

But I am inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt because a year or so ago there was a reality show where they had 2 men and 2 women switch genders for a couple of weeks, and it was intellingently done and very educational.

They showed the four of them going to a ballgame in one segment. In another segment they had the M2Fs going to work - one as a bartender and the other at a retail makeup counter. It was very well done, and the men took their female roles very seriously.

I don't want to shift the topic, but does anyone recall that one? :-k

I think before watching any episodes, I will read the opinions of the forum members who do watch it, but I usually stay away from reality shows.

Lorna,

I remember the the TV show with the 2 MTF & 2 FTM volunteers. I videotaped it (long since taped over) and watched it with my wife and we discussed it. The point of our discussions was that I did not want to go out CD'd in public, just to dress around home and she was and still is all right about that.

The program was well done and if I remember correctly, in the end one of the FTMs continued to hold on to their cross gender identity.

Hi girls,

TV and the big screen have never been too kind to us, although there was Tootsie and Mrs Doubtfire. While I do expect this to be a circus, I also expect in the end it may help us.

First, they really are going to transform someone. A regular guy. Showing just a regular man crossdressed, not gay sex perverts with some agenda.

Second, they will have the best makeup, and wardrobe people, as well as feminization training. As many of you are well aware, it is difficult to learn what to wear, colors, sizes, styles. They will have help with all of this.

If in the end it turns out to be some hetero men who appear to be women, it could be a huge help. Perhaps when people see us out, they will think about that, instead of what has been drilled into their heads.

I know it is a bit optomistic, but that is me.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Hi all. :) Hey Elizabeth, nice avatar there girl. =D>

Like the rest of you, I view the upcoming series with some disquiet, but it will likely depend on the producer and how they decide the subject is viewed "at-large". Since it is a reality series "entertainment", I really fear the worst, but hope for the best. :?

Lorna,

The show which you mentioned was on A&E. It was a documentary not a "reality show." The show was called Role Reversal and the videotape is available for sale on the A&E T.V. store.

I agree with what some of the others have mentione. I am a bit skeptical that this show may be intended to poke fun at us. I am willing to watch the first episode to see what it is like.

Well Sharon, it was quite some time since I've seen it. It seemed like a reality show to me the way it was presented. And it only aired once. At any rate it was well done.

I just thought of one way this "He's a Lady" show could be beneficial -- If you're a CD who has thus far been reluctant to venture out, and you have a trusted friend/relative/SO who has a camcorder, here's your excuse to go clothes-shopping!

to be honest, I'd rather not go out than hide behind the pretence of a vacuous 'entertainement' show that will inevitably poke fun at us.

No offense meant, Eloise, I was just trying to add some levity. Remember, I started this thread by decrying the show's concept.

Hi I we can't laugh at ourselves whom should we be laughing at? Not everything is a do or die situation, some things are done just for fun, that's why we have President Bush> I am going to watch and I'll probably laugh or cry? I am not going to take this too seriously, I don't take life too seriously anymore , I'm not going to get out of it alive anyway ....Kristen
