According to boffins life on Earth gets zapped every 27 million years

The next one is not due for another 16 million years - phew! I will have to wash those panties after all.

My calculations put it closer to 2 million years. When the time comes, if I'm wrong, I'll be sure to admit it. 8)

To quote Luke Perry, "So...I've got some time then?"

Extinction events

Post by Joan »

A few ancient civilisations have predicted December 21st 2012 as the beginning of end of time. These include:
Mayans
Egyptians
Hopi indians (they predict a choice mankind must make not the actual anihation or big change date.
Old Indian (Asia) civilisation
Jews

We will see a blue light or flash and that is it. This will obviously be the x-ray emmissions of a dying sun - a neutron star or pulsar.

Live life to the Max enjoy being whoever you are.

It sure is a dangerous universe out there. We are familiar with strictly 'local' threats like asteroids crashing into the Earth or a coronal mass ejection from the Sun scrambling the world's satellites and electrical systems. There are bigger and better events out there that are amazing to consider as threats.

There are a number of very big (over 60 solar mass) stars within 10000 light years and one attribute of these big stars is that they have very short lives circa 1 million years compared to our Sun which is expected to remain essentially the same for another 4 billion years. The big stars shed an enormous amount of matter in their short lives, you yourself are a product of this process. When these stars run out of fuel they can explode in a supernova. For a short time this explosion will outshine the rest of the galaxy (100 billion stars) If this is close enough to us the gamma ray blast will strip Earth of its atmosphere.

There are other things out there that have a similar range to their punch.

Don't worry about it. There is nothing we can do about it and it hasn't happened here for 4 billion years.

Actually, right now, this instant, is the beginning of end of time. The first day of the rest of your life. We can't back up.

End of Time

Very well put Susan

Like myself you must watch too many documentaries or your work involves you in such science. Or possibly the universe / cosmos is an interest of yours.
