The earth moved

Post by DonnaT »

But not under my feet.

We had an earthquake this morning. My wife was up, and heard/felt it, and asked if I did.

But we have a sleep number bed, so I didn't feel a thing. So, still haven't ever felt one.

Even here in the UK we get quakes strong enough to feel. Back in 1984 we had one (a 5.4 quake - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Ll%C5 ... earthquake ) just as I was getting ready to go to work. The first thing I noticed was the ironing board dancing along the wall to the accompaniment of the sounds of glasses in the display cabinet vibrating together.

No damage done but I do remember the feeling of disorientation at the start.

Hey girls,

http://images.huffingtonpost.com/gen/13 ... -LINES.jpg

While California gets a bad rap, there are other major earthquake zones in the US that not only do not build for the eventuality of the earthquakes, but even the citizens themselves are unaware they are on major fault lines.

It's going to be the difference between the earthquakes in Chile, which build to earthquake standards even higher than Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the quake in Haiti where living on fault lines have been ignored in the building codes.

People just do not think about Memphis being in as dangerous of a fault line as Los Angeles. When I think of the South Carolina Coast, beautiful btw, I don't think of a place theatened by catostrophic earthquakes. I think hurricane.

But it is not a question of "if" they have an earthquake, it's only a question of "when?". Living just a few miles from the San Andreas fault, I like most californian's are somewhat prepared. I keep 10 gallons of bottled water. Emergency flashlights and radio. Food that need not be cooked, but can still be stored for a lengthy period and walkie talkies.

We have a meeting place in the event we are separated at the time of a quake. And everyone has an evacuation plan in the event of a quake. We talk about it. I regularly grill everyone with questions about "what would they do if?", so as to make sure everyone understands and remembers the plan.

This is standard stuff here in southern california. Just like those in area's of hurricanes know what to do and make plans accordingly. My son recently got to experience how people prepare for tornadoes. While in Oklahoma, the horns went off at his mother in laws place and they had to drive to grandma's to get into the storm cellar.

In the storm cellar was all the things you would expect. Water, food, flashlights, spare cell phone, portable restroom. People prepare for what they know as a threat. So it's weird that people that live on active fault lines are not really taking it all that serious.

Unfortunately it always takes tragedy to get anything changed. San Francisco had to burn to the ground and in both the 1989 San Francisco World Series quake and the 1994 Northridge quake, we still seen failures of structures that were supposedly "earthquake proof", that led to loss of lives.

Love always,
Elizabeth

Don't forget the New Madrid area of Missouri, that has got the USGS twitchy since it cut loose in 1812-13

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone

Another major quake that occurred in the past was the 1755 quake that flattened Lisbon in Portugal.

Earthquakes happen whenever and wherever they will. May all yours be small enough to only be talking points.

We zombie sleeping dead people didn't feel it here. Hhhuummmm..... I wonder if the furry alarms did? Nothing fell off our shelves here either. I saw pictures of the epicenter. I wonder if it was at the center of the building in the center of the arch? Kinda would be some omen I think :)

I've been where they were reported twice, didn't notice anything either time. I gotta start paying attention.

Hi all,

Go figure: a quake in my home town and I miss it! I was riding the subway when it happened. I had notifications of more than half a dozen missed calls waiting on my cell when I exited the Metro... friends, colleagues, and my SO, Roxanne, all wanting to know if I felt a little shaken, rattled, and rolled. Nope. Missed it. Next time, I guess.

I'm just glad nobody was hurt and that, apparently, structural damages were minimal.

Love,
CJ

What quake?

Post by Jeannie »

Hi ladies
It's only me, menace to all mankind,Auntie Jeannie. You girls should move to Connecticut. We rarely get any severe weather. There was a small tornado a few weeks ago and it hit Bridgeport but no one cared. If you were ever in Bridgeport you will understand.
Hey Karren! We miss you on Facebook Babycakes but not really. I've been causing some serious trouble on there. My inappropriate joke of the day is a real crowd pleaser but after my last one, the Lesbians are up in arms. You mention flannel shirts and mullets and they go crazy. Hey. Life is rough. Get over it!
I have to get back down my shop and do some numbering. Enjoy your weekend ladies. If you don't, I'll do it for you. Life is good when you are out of control! Marley says"Hi." Hugs.

Love
Auntie Jeannie
