but on the other hand CDDF (apparently) continues to be THE most popular CD site on the web. sometimes you see topics there that one won't find easily elsewhere on the net.

heavily moderated forums and sign up regulations can cause a forum to come to a dead halt!

You're right about heavily moderated forums, I suppose. However, I don't think our only option is a completely unmoderated forum. This one here strikes a good balance, I find, what with the wonderful job Shannon, Sharon, Beauty, and Lefty are doing.

The CDDF occasionally does have fascinating (and sometimes brutally honest) threads, but its absolute lack of community spirit is making even hardcore old-timers flee, as if from a plague (Penny T being the latest casualty). Seems the CDDF is winding down, in great part due to a lack of adequate moderation.

I guess it's good to have the CDDF floating around out there in cyberspace. I rarely visit, so I don't know all that's happening there.
I tend to relate better with sheep, than with wolves AND that's exactly my point. I don't like it very much, therefore I don't go there. No one forces me to type their URL and read what's posted.

I love this forum. I agree that we have a wonderful balance of topic and moderation.
KUDOS to our crew: Shannon, Sharon, Beauty, and Lefty =D> =D> =D>

CDDF requires an awkward combination of soft skin and tough hide. Maintaining both is a challenge, to say the least. :|

I am still a CDDF fan. :)

James seems to be doing more. When I go on there I don't see troll stuff near as much.

Good post Anita! =D>

My second favorite site on the net is largely unmoderated!!!   For those of us "in that business" its often the ONLY source of information that we get on certain topics. If it was strictly regulated, people in fear of their jobs wouldn't post and the forum would be useless. But yes, one has to wade through 90% muck and spray themselves with Pam before going online.

. . . while on the other hand, I know this well-meaning fellow who created this website for open political discussion and it initially held a lot of promise . . . unfortunately he started doing something that what I thought was "micro-managing" so this forum has gone nowhere and I became disinterested and the forum dropped off my surf list.

The Internet is still rather young, as far as forums like this go. Everyone's still experimenting with what works best. If a wide-open policy brings you info that you want and need, Alexandra, I can see why you'd like to keep it that way.

The wide-open info that I need about CDing usually comes from email correspondence from other girls that are exploring the same issues I am. I wouldn't get this information from forums, so I guess I don't expect as much from them.

The popularity of the CDDF is a double-edged sword. There's never a dull moment there, but even the best post can get swept away and gone in less than a day. It's the equivalent of TV news--you get a ten-second sound bite to express your views, and then it's on to the next topic for that night's presentation.

This is more like readng a news magazine over here--the subject gets covered in more depth and over more time, with this format. There's a place for both forums. But I'm glad I'm not relying on only the CDDF for community and info!

That said, I'm willing to go back in there and share my own info and quick bits. I'm gotten my "tough hide" back, to quote Celia.

As much as I might complain about CDDF, I don't seriously intend to abandon it. Although the easy, casual access certainly has its down side, the up side is that an otherwise noncommital person (one, for example, that might shy away from registering in a forum) can easily ask a legitimate question, make a legitimate observation, etc.--and this still does happen to a surprising extent at CDDF. :)

Being at Crossdressers-Forum is like being at home with family: by and large, it's intimate, soothing, supportive, and secure. @@9@@ CDDF is like a public hangout--you can't really rely on any of the nice things that you would expect here, but that doesn't mean it isn't an interesting place.

Btw, Anita, thanks for mentioning the tumble-weed post. (--) At the time, it really did describe the way I felt. :|
