The Coolest Argument

I recently posted this story on my blog....

A few days ago when I went out, I decided to wear my Doc Martin Mary Janes shoes. I don't wear them often, but they're one of those pairs I always tell myself I need to use more often. They're black, got two peep holes on the tops, thick straps and buckle with a raised heel. They look especially cool when worn with white tights. Anyway, when I got home I left them downstairs where there's a shoe 'dumping ground' as it were. Yesterday while I was at work, my wife informed me that my twelve year old daughter was eyeing them up for school. I had to issue a hands off warning hahaha. It's weird how she didn't say anything when we all went out and I was wearing them, but now she's decided she needs them. Trouble is, I really really like these ones.

When I got home, I had to restate my hands off warning, and was hit with "but but, I need them for school!". I answered noooo! You need SHOES for school, absolutely!, just not mine! You'll have to get some new ones etc...

At this point I figured this little engagement was over. My wife was having a giggle as her hubwife and daughter are squabbling over shoes etc... As I basked in victory, my daughter retreated to her room.

Fifteen minutes later, she came back down the stairs.

Dad? I have an offer to make?!
Me.. Oh yeah what's up?
I'll give you....this dress (holds up a grey dress), I'll find you some other shoes, and I'll throw in this..( holds up a black shrug to go with the dress)

Dang it she knows how to play me hahaha. But I want my shoes!

Me... Hmmm. Sorry hon, the shoes aren't up for a deal, I need them!
She pulled the sad eyed look and conceded the shoes..

Feeling bad, I pointed out that she can get some new school shoes of her choice anyway, so don't worry about it?! I suspect this ones gonna cost me a bit more than I'd prefer, but that's the cost of a good shoe I guess? ( I also think that if I gave her mine, she would damage them quite quickly cos she's hard wearing like that)


Since posting it, a few of you have come down on the side of my daughter Wooooahhh. Hold on here These are no ordinary Doc Martins, they're the old made in the UK ones and the style isn't available anymore.. Highly prized! I've offered her a shoe shopping session to pick a pair of her liking to try and keep hold of these. If she has them off me I think they'll be damaged beyond repair quite quickly, and on the other hand if I were to keep them they would be much loved, cleaned, fed etc and have a much brighter future.

Before you vote, please won't somebody think of what's best for the shoes ?!!?

Anna, I don't think they're any more the rage than they used to be, most of the kids are into converse and she's had two pairs of those this year already

These shoes although brand new, are about ten years old. My wife offered them to my daughter at the beginning of the year from her collection, but my daughter turned her nose up at them. They weren't her style? I jumped in and said ooooh me likey, and they were given to me. It's only since I started wearing them my daughter has had a change of heart?

As long as she isn't walking to school uphill in the snow barefoot in both directions then let her get her own to her liking. That's the best part of being a parent...we're higher on the food chain...BWAHAHAHA!!! You go "Mary Jane"!!!

Girls may say they hate the clothes their mothers wear but then try to borrow beg or steal them. Since you are daddymom you are granted access to that world.

I vote for the shoes. If it was for a very special occasion, I might let her wear them, but for wear at school or eveyday no. As SL said she needs her own.

With me the sad eyed look would have been a big mistake. Like after that I would have decided she was just trying to manipulate me and it would have switched me right off. FWIW I actually wear stuff out really quickly (very undainty and ladylike)...

I've had a fair number of occasions when shopping for women's stuff when, if I look at something, the other women (ooh I just described myself as a woman, how about that) want to look at it too (or maybe that's because there's some weird thing about if a man's interested in it it must be good).

It would be interesting to go shoe shopping with your daughter. Maybe that's what it's really about, her saying she rates your judgement.

Heehee. I know right? She's slightly smaller than me, but can fit my shoes. Kinda scary It has benefits too, she's just left her 'pink' stage and gone all goth so she's given me some pink 'hand me downs!'
