Another step out of the closet

Post by Heather W »

<> As I said in my introduction I have been out a few times but generally under the cover of darkness. Well yesterday I decided enough was enough. I got dressed in black knee length skirt, red and black print sweater, black tights, and black high heel knee high boots. After my make-up was done and the wig and jewelry all sorted our I took a look n the mirror, This is as good as it gets Heather I thought and out I went after putting my pea coat and grabbing my purse. Not sure I was ready for the mall so my first stop was the local Starbucks for a latte. Rather than going through the drive thru as I always do I went inside. There were just a couple of people there but not too may so I went up to the counter and in my best femme voice I ordered. I must have not looked because as I waited I noticed a couple of businessmen sitting at a table and I am sure at least one of them was checking me out! 8)

I the headed over to Walgreen's and got myself some nail polish. I think the lady at the checkout knew but somehow unlike before I didn't feel the need to run and hide. I just casually paid for my purchase ad took the bag and walked out to my car as casually as I could like I had been doing this all my life. Truth is I was shaking inside! One part of me said go home and back into the closet but I knew if I did I would hide there for years again so onward I went. My next stop was Kohl's. I browsed the clothes for a bit before selecting 3 skirts. Unlike before I knew I had to take the next step. I found the nearest fitting room and in I went. Turns out it was a good thing I did try them on because one that was so cute on the hanger looked awful on, the second one just wasn't right for my shape but the third one was absolutely adorable. =D> I ended up taking it in the green color.

I headed off to the shoe department next and they really didn't have a lot that caught my eye, looked like they were in between winter and spring styles. Seeing as it was only about 20 degrees outside shopping for spring just didn't strike my fancy. I then made a quick stop in hosiery and picked up a couple of pairs of pantyhose, a girl can never have enough pantyhose, and a pair of thigh high stockings. I have never worn thigh highs but I have read so much that a lot of girls like them I figured why not try them? I then went to check out. I waited in line patiently and when I checked out the girl ringing me up very nonchalantly asked "Will this be on your Kohl's charge?" I panicked for a second then thought no time like the present so I got my Kohl's charge out of my purse and handed it to her. She did a double take at the name and me then asked to see some id so I very casually showed her my drivers license. She just smiled and everything went through. :)

By now my heart was racing as I walked through the parking lot back to my car. I wasn't sure if had anymore courage in me so I headed home and made myself a nice salad for lunch. I was though shopping for the day I thought so changed into my denim mini and some flats and poured myself a glass of wine. Heather you have quite the day I thought to myself, almost sorry I have to go back to work next week or maybe it is good. I might become a shopaholic!

Nice Heather! We have something in common in that a glass of wine is a good way to finish the day.
Did you go to stores outside your area? The reason I ask is that when my Hubby dresses up, no matter how great he looks, we can recognize his male face. Gaining confidence for him was going to places that don't know him.
I'm sorry I keep messing up the him/her adjectives, just can't used to it.

*-* Congratulations Heather! *-* The air out in the open is just so much fresher than in the closet, isn't it? I did a chuckle out of becoming a shopaholic because trust me girlfriend a lot of us are! Keep up the outings and keep us informed. You will find no more greater cheerleaders than the girls here!

Oh yeah, you will definitely join the ranks of shopaholics now
I'm glad to hear that you got out and went the whole day without chickening out. It is a bit uncomfortable when you are thinking that everyone is looking at you, but a person get's over that. I think most people are just harmlessly curious and there is nothing wrong with that.
And congrats on the skirt!

Yeppers, Conrgats! Heather!

I do prefer that skirt in green :) Good you didn't chicken out with your driver's license. That makes all the next times easier. Around here any more if there is no picture on the credit card, they ask for ID. Once in awhile I get asked for mine instead of hubby's :) gotta love those moments.

Way to go Sweety, I hope to be that brave soon. Still working up to the courage to let my roommate see me dressed, which is not a big deal, as they are lesbians, but I still get nervous. I'm not sure how I would feel as to men checkin me out, as technically I'm still interested in women, but I'm sure it feels nice to be admired no matter who. Great name by the way Heather. Maybe when I finally make it to the crossdressers international group, I'll get more courage.

Way to go Heather. Getting out and about is fun.

Eileen I will agree with you that going out of the area makes it more relaxing as one is less likely to be recognized. At least it was for me.

Way to go girl. Confidence is the big trick to getting out. and it sounds like through your
courage you managed your confidence quite well. Next time it will be much easier.

Heather, stories like yours inspire me and will make it easier when I can out as Olivia. I really think it would be exciting to know guys were checking me out. I would not lead anyone on, but for a woman my age it would be cool.

Heather that sounds like you really enjoyed yourself and you did it all by yourself. For my first long shop in the mall and restaurant meal, just under a year ago, I needed someone to hold my hand but the boost to my confidence set me off running. Now you've done it once your confidence will carry you anywhere.
