Nails

Post by Martha G »

Do you ladies recommend doing your own nails or getting pop on nails?

It seems that the pop on nails would be the easiest.

Your opinions please.

Pop on are alright, but can quickly become Pop-offs ;)

I prefer doing my own.

I have done it both ways and prefer to just do my own even if they are short.

You look at the pop on nails and read the instructions and it sure seems easy. Then you put one on and all of a sudden you are acting like you are hanging wallpaper. The nail has to fit just right and if not, then be perfectly centered. The darn things are quite happy sticking on crooked and messing up the sticky when you need to adjust them. Then you get a little quicker with the next four. Boom! Change hands and the whole process starts over but this time you put on wonky glasses. You might have mastered one set of nails being applied with your dominant hand, but your other hand was never paying attention. You get three more on; so close to being done. The last two feel impossible because of the angle of the nails, the hands and what the eyes can see clearly. Okay! Done! WOW! They look great! ...... until the first one pops off with the first bump and the other lemmings follow.

Okay so then you decide to paint. I see in front of the TV and do my own mani and pedi. The one thing I'm good at goofing is always wanting to trim my cuticles; All the magazines say don't do it, but mine seem like they could cover my nails so once it awhile I cut them. When you go owwwww even if you hadn't actually cut yet, the odds are good you're gonna draw blood. This look of bloody or scabbed cuticles does not add to the beauty of your nail polish.

For the polish itself, a light color is more forgiving with mistakes than a bright or dark color. Also, some light colors can be wore when drab; you have to see how comfortable you are doing it. One accessory for doing nails is a Q-Tip with a little bit of polish remover on it. That's for the mistakes. An early mistake lots of girls make is putting on too heavy a first coat. If you vigorously mixed your polish then tried for the "three strokes; the odds are good you're going to get bubbles as the polish dries. No, you don't always have to start over; the Q-Tip can smooth the imperfections then you can put a thin layer of color back on to even it out and hide the mistake.

SSSSsoooooooo both pop on and polish sound complicated. I do my own nails and hate the self stick pop on nails as I find they take as long as polishing. Plus, my nail polish will out last a pop on nail by days. A polished nail be it long or short looks good for longer.

Now that's nail polish and pop on nails. I have also done the peel and stick nail polish. These are also a "wall papering" effort, but they have the advantage of lasting as long as having polished your nails yourself. Finding a set of nail polishes that fit a fat nail is difficult but if you can do it, the patterns and prints are ever so fun. I don't do my fingers very often and has taken to using nail decals instead. However, if I get in the mood and I can find them, there is a python print from Sally Hanson for doing your toes. Even drab, I like showing off that print in sandals.

Hope all this ramble helps.

Seems "pop-on" nails get a bad rap from most, but I've had great success with them. There are a couple different techniques I've learned from those who've been using them for years, and with practice you will successfully be wearing your own press ons without fear of loosing one halfway through your outing. There are also additional benefits of having different lengths and colours already prepared which can be swapped out rather quickly. I see that it's not for everybody, but they work terrific for me.

My natural nails are so thin and brittle as to be useless. The solution for me is to have gel nails applied at a salon. They look very natural, are strong, can be polished and polish can be easily removed.

What works for me is i first buff mu nails with a white sanding pad sold at most beauty supply places, then I clean them with alcohol. Then I use nail tabs from Sally's ( double sided glue dots) they are shaped to fit your nails. I have to trim the tabs a little as they are a little long on some fingers.
