I have mixed emotions on this one and wonder how others see it. On one hand the University of Kansas is demonstrating they understand the issues the LGBTQ student and the community face and are offering them a safe haven. On the other hand it shows that society still has problems with the LGBTQ community and there is a need for a safe haven.

Yes the University of Kansas should be congratulated for taking a step to show they accepting of the LGBTQ community and in their own way welcoming them. Still the true desire of the community is to be accepted into society as just people sans labels.

Yes they did request this however I think you would agree regardless of the public reasoning given safety was also an issue for that request. As I stated in my original post the desire of the community is acceptance as people without the labels society feels it has to saddle individuals and groups with.

This a double edged sword however considering the current trends taken by many states and organizations the University of Kansas is to be applauded for at least trying. Amanda I too dream of a world where people are accepted without labels however I think we both know that will never really happen. Let us take our victories when and where they come and look ahead to our next step forward.

I can understand the mixed emotions here however I view this as a step I n the right direction. They are saying yes we welcome you as students and as people. We all know of someone or ourselves who have faced the bullying, taunts, and outright hatred some seem to hurl at us or anyone who is "different." A place to call home so to speak where one can feel safe, have friends, and talk about everything openly without the fear of any of that is welcome IMO.

In a past life I spent some time working with college students. Dorm wings, or even full dorms, dedicated to some special interest are common at universities. Most are dedicated to specific academic areas, e.g. engineering, art, language. Others towards some non academic interest, the most common is some outdoorsies interest, or political leaning, racial.

The interesting thing to watch, and you'll probably not see it reported in the media, is how the rest of the student body view (i.e. the attitude toward) the micro community. It is indeed a double edged.

That said, I think it is a right step. Radical things that happened on campus yesterday are main stream today.

KU has had a office dedicated to LGBT for a lot years so this is not something new for them to be involved in tying to accommodate the students who go there. It is just a shame that more schools don't get as involved as they do.
