News From Around the World

Post by Danielle La Belle »

On occasion, I plan on posting links to various CD related topics of my choice in this thread. If I see that the "view" number is reasonable, I will continue with this effort to supply worthwhile papers, editorials etc.

The first link is about a University teacher that went "girl" 24/7 for two months to support his new book "New Girl."

Some very good insight into the world of women and business.

Good reading!

I can't comment on that book, however, another book released this year by another college professor sort of details what the change from a male to a female was like for her as well. Its called "She's Not There" by Jennifer Finney Boylan. A good and easy read.

There is a difference Alexandra on the two books.

"She's Not There" by Jennifer Finney Boylan
Jennifer is a married post-op transexual.
She teaches Literature and English at a New England University.

The book, "New Girl," was written by a non T* male that teaches a course in media. He opted to spend a year getting ready for the "appearance" change so that he could have first-hand information for the book. It is interesting to note that a judge permitted the writer to a name change and had a drivers license with the [female] box checked. Something that in most US states we cannot do with or without the external "male" anatomical parts. Perhaps we all should write a book?

Thank you for the compliment Shannon. Research has it's price. It is time consumming but I enjoy the opportunity to serve in this manner.

Current news from "Newsweek - on-line.

http://www.msnbc.com/news/969056.asp

"Waving pompoms and wearing kilts, these young men and women root for political causes, not sports teams."

"Sept. 29 issue — At first, the cheerleaders getting ready for practice in a Los Angeles park seem like average teens as they sip Coke and pepper their sentences with “like.” But then 17-year-old Larry Wood peels off his sweat pants to reveal a short black and red pleated skirt."

The story about the cheerleaders is really cool. I agree that is it a good way to get a message out as people notice cheerleaders.

For those following this thread you may find the following review interesting.

A television commercial as such:

A woman standing at the bottom of a set of hallway stairs eating ice cream. The male counter-part, father or husband appears suddenly at the top of the stairs and makes a remark about the woman eating ice cream. She replys that it is ok since she had lunch at "Subway" (US sub-sandwich shop - national chain of franchised stores).

The camera goes outside and the man is washing his car.
Yes, but wait......... he is dressed in full regala as a woman in a cheerleading outfit. Complete as a blue/white outfit with a short skirt that is fashionably pleated. He dances about and says it's okay, he went to "Subway."!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Commercial was run on TNT - cable/satelite (Direct TV) station.
October 6, 2003 at 5:00pm est USA.

This commercial followed a show called "Judging Amy" and had an 8 year old boy (female actress played the part) cross dressing as a girl and going to school with the parents blessings. Transgendered was mentioned and the family court judge (Amy) settled the dispute with the parents and child services by telling the child that he was good at pretend so he could pretend he was a boy when at school and dress accordingly, then dress as he liked when at home and other times.

It was her judgement that an 8 year old is too young to making such choices at that time.

Typically turned down to spare the sensitivities of the viewing public.

All this in a one-hour time frame.

My wife was stunned and had no comment but she did watch the program and advertisement not knowing what was about to take place in both cases.

Danielle,

It's interesting that you posted about the "subway" commercial as it seems to be the topic of the moment in one of the other forums I belong to. I hadn't gotten a chance to view it yet so thank you so much for describing it.

FYI re: Subway commercial with cross dressed male as cheer leader.

01. My email reply 02. Subway reply 03. My original email.

I wish to thank you for your recent response to my inquiry regarding the current "Subway" advertising that supports a cross dressing male as part of the marketing plan.

Your letter incorrectly assumed that I was "offended" by this "Mary" imitation. Contrary to what you may have thought, I found the television "spot" only slightly remiss in not providing a little more studio makeup support for the actor. Of course, that would take away from the comedic side of the piece and step to far into the realm of the "Transgender" community. Not a very kindly position to be in on a public/political basis.

Stereotyping is not unusual in the world of "Madison Avenue," as I have addressed this letter to a "female" rather than a male. Stereotypically, women are employed in jobs such as nursing, marketing, human resources, organizational management. Jobs that are considered by some as "female" by nature. So you see "Christopher?" perhaps, I am only applying a stereotypical slant to your personal nature as present in the letter. I think it is safe to say that the "T*" community found the advertisement rather funny as well, we would never forget to shave closely and appear as the actor was presented.

FYI ----the photo I have provided is more closely representative of our community; the many that you never see in any given day. It is too bad that we are all characteredized as either incompetent, prostitutes, an a like rather than intelligent, intellectual beings that are for the most part considerate, kind, humane, and reasonable. 90% of our community consists of married, hetro-sexual males, a good portion with children and grand-children and no we are not listed as having a disorder in the current copy of the Psychiatric DSM-IV manual of unrelated, recognized medical disorders.

Perhaps there may be a day in time when we can safely employ those of the "transgendered" community for a more positive application in advertising while still having a good laugh about ourselves. Thank you once again for your immediate attention.

Thank You

Danielle La Belle

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments.

We were sorry to hear that you were offended by one of our recent television commercials. We can assure you that no harm was intended and we apologize for causing you concern.

The Subway® Advertising Department works with a Board of Trustees, as well as a national advertising agency and several local advertising agencies, to develop national advertising that tells customers about our great products.

In addition, all of our ads are tested with numerous consumers before they
are aired to ensure that the overall reactions to the commercials are
positive. Our ads are meant to be fun and humorous and it was never our
intention to offend.

As a leader in the sandwich-making industry, we want sub-lovers everywhere to know that Subway is dedicated to the concerned citizens that have helped us grow our business. Again, thank you for taking the time to express your views. Your input and concern is appreciated

Gentlemen:

I recently viewed your newest commercial advertising the "Subway" products. It appears that a cross dressing man is washing his car at the end of the commercial dressed as a cheer leader. Okay, you have my attention. What's the point? I guess I missed the hidden cues for this commercial. Any input would be appreciated.

Gay Genetics
by Peter Moore
365Gay.com Newscenter
London Bureau

(London) British psychologists say they have found strong evidence to support the theory that a person's sexuality is "hard-wired" into the brain before birth.

Researchers from the University of East London and from King's College measured the "startle" response, or eye-blink reaction, of both straight and gay test subjects who were subjected to sudden bursts of loud noises. The technique is called prepulse inhibition or PPI.

The scientists, Qazi Rahman, of the University of East London, and Dr Veena Kumari and Dr Glenn Wilson of the Institute of Psychiatry, part of King's College London, claim the study is the first independent evidence of " a non-learned, neurological basis for sexual orientation."
They say that they found significant differences in the response between male and female, heterosexual and gay participants.

The reaction of the lesbian test subjects was closer to that which would be expected among straight men. And, gay men reacted closer that of women, although to a lesser extent.

To measure the 'blink' response the researchers attached electrodes on the test subjects faces just beneath their eyes. They then measured the strength of the involuntary eye-blink responses to the noises and compared them with those of a loud noise on its own.

"The startle response is pre-conscious and cannot be learned, Rahman told the Reuters news agency.
" It is mediated by an ancient region of the brain called the limbic system which also controls sexual behavior. This is very strong evidence that female sexual orientation at least may be 'hard-wired' in this region."Rahman said the results could affect the way society dealt with sexuality and issues of sexual orientation.
