Preferred Pronouns

Post by Davita »

All (most?) of my doctor offices ask for preferred pronouns not that I have noticed them using them. Anyway, with my last forms filling, that question was there so I answered, "it depends." Well it does; why dance about it. So my PT mentioned she liked the answer. Then again, she knows. What I don't like about this "preferred pronouns" question is that many limit you to one gender or you need to be a plural person. This time I got the chance to select the correct answer. BTW, my PT greeted me as my formal name and as "Davita."

How often do you guys actually answer the "preferred pronouns" question the way you really feel?

I seldom have not seen or noticed the question. The few times I have seen it I have been able to not answer. So sure that does not answer your question.

If I were going to answer, it would be depends on my presentation. Personally i do not care what pronouns people use. I am both or mixed. Some may say mixed up. 8)

I don't think I have to state my bona fides to weigh in here. IMHO there are two different scenarios, that of the crossdresser and that of the trans individual. In the case of the crossdresser IMO one should use the pronoun of the gender presented at the time, it's simple common courtesy. In the case of the trans person it is a very different situation.

Misgendering someone who identifies as trans whether it is based on physical appearance or not is very bluntly saying I deny your existence. I will grant you some can be based on ignorance of the situation or a simple slip of the tongue however and trying very hard not to get political here the vast majority is based on hate of the trans community and/or ignorance of scientific fact that transgenderism is real.

I can understand that what one has "known" for years is tough to set aside and embrace a new reality. I can even accept those who are accepting may slip in the beginning as new reality sinks in however to continue to do so is not "just the way it used to be" rather a direct slap in the face of trans people. IMO it ranks right up there with intentionally and repeatedly mispronouncing one's name.

so this subject again, in a different thread this time......

Maybe I said this last time, but after considerable effort I (and some others) finally got preferred pronouns officially added to our company's email signature. Not everyone chooses to use that feature but that's fine.

So obviously mine (zie/zir/zirs) are a option because I specifically put them on the list. And after a couple years, there are still only a handful of people at my work who get it right. Now I get that those are unusual options, and maybe it's hard to remember every time - but most people don't make even the basic effort. Most people use the wrong one every single time.
And yeah, that does annoy me. I keep telling myself that it shouldn't, but still, it does.

Yea I work in a office where the employee hand book says they are accepting. But the reality is many in the office are from the other side of the tracks. They do not accept any different pronouns.
