I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves
me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country.

As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned
and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and
the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its
reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until
all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic
is destroyed.

~President Abraham Lincoln, 1865~

The Shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks the shephard as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as a destroyer of liberty" - Abraham Lincoln

If there were in the world today any large number of people who desired their own happiness more than they desired the unhappiness of others, we could have paradise in a few years.

"I object to anything that divides the two sexes. My main point is this: human development has now reached a point at which sexual difference has become a thing of altogether minor importance. We make too much of it; we are men and women in the second place, human beings in the first."

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every expierence in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself. "I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along."

Abraham Lincoln wrote:“We may congratulate ourselves that this cruel war is nearing its end. It has cost a vast amount of treasure and blood. It has indeed been a trying hour for the Republic; but I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless.”

                                                                                             —Abraham Lincoln

Note.—This passage originally appeared in a letter from Abraham Lincoln to Colonel William F. Elkins, written November 21, 1864.

Although we must hope that some good can be salvaged from the Iraq war, it is clear that almost all wars rest on “the prejudices of the people” and the greed of those who expect to make a lot of money from those wars.

I would like to make two suggestions for those who post in this area of the forum. If you are going to copy quotes, give a reference. If the quote is interesting or pertinent to anything, it would be nice to be able to find the original. Taken out of context, quotes can be misleading. Also, it might be nice if the poster would add some comments of her or his own. Does the quotation support some position with which you agree? Or what do you consider its significance to be? Creativity means originating something, not just randomly copying material from the Wal-Mart Book of Quotations.
Take care,

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

Creativity is...seeing something that doesn't exist already. You need to find out how you can bring it into being and that way be a playmate with God.
