Anyone into canning?, the wife and I put up 19 quarts of tomatoes this morning and more on the vines. Last week we put up greenbeans, 10 pints.
Oh I love living in the country where life is so much simpler.
Got to go see the doctor as my foot is who knows what? swollen for 3 weeks now all because of those new heels I purchased. Damn they were comfortable and fit and wore them all day but the next day I couldn't walk on my foot. Not sure if I will play stupid or tell him the truth, no think I will play stupid and see what happens.
For a minute I thought your wife had caned you for bending wrong again
Nope, never done any canning. My Mom used to, and my MIL still does.
As for the shoes, just tell the doc you wore some new shoes and the swelling occured the next day. No need to elaborate on the fact that they were heels.
My grandmother used to can pears and figs when I was younger. If I didn't live in the city two blocks from a supermarket full of fresh fruits and vegetables every day, I'd probably put up several Mason jars full of things every year.
Kathy, we won't even ask what you would put in those Mason jars!!
I had a brother-in-law who use to be caned often, then he got religion, then he lost it and got caned again. Actually kinda sad! ----- NOT!
I think the new fad is those counter top driers that you put stuff, bananas, apples (some claim to have dried watermelon - I question that?!) Anyway, dried fruit. Like an old dried fruit! Like just add water??
Moving right along, glad you can can!!!! or is that you do can can?
As for your foot, perhaps one of the cows from across the road accidentally stepped on your foot during that croquette game? Well that's what I heard, a cow heard, a cow heard what? I tell you I don't really care what a cow herd, just so long as they don't moooove to fast!
Virginia
in dire need of a long vacation.
First star to the right, then straight on 'till mornin!
Carol Ann - My family has never been into canning, although both sets of grandparents and their siblings did so "back in the day"!! While I do enjoy fresh just-picked fruits and vegetables, I'd much rather buy the majority my food from the corner market store . . . I especially like those that come saran-wrapped on those lovely pink, yellow, white, and blue styrofoam platters!!
Tekla - What do happy bars have to do with dried fruit?!?

The effort required is just not worth it to me. I am ok just buying stewed tomatoes. If I count up what I charge an employer for my time, those canned tomatoes would end up costing about $50 a can. I value my time, even if it's just leisure. The time required to grow, clean, peel, cook, can, and seal the tomatoes is just too much for me. Not to mention I only use about 4 cans a year.
I am just not into canned goods. I prefer fresh or fresh frozen vegetables.
When I was a kid we did. My mom grew up on a farm where they made their own yogurt and cottage cheese (after milking the cow) and canned as much as possible for the winter. She carried on that tradition when I was a kid in the suburbs. But I've never been able to get my vegetable garden to rival my moms and haven't done this in years.
It's pretty funny. At one time I lived in the midwest. To the folks there the highest comliment you could pay them was that their homegrown and homemade stuff (home made icecream was a big deal) tasted as good as the store bought stuff.
When I was little my siblings and I would also load up our wagon and walk around to our neighbors peddling produce from the garden. 15 cents for a bag of fresh lettuce and so on. I'll date myself and say that we considered that a lot of money back then.

Oh come on girls you'al miss the fun in it. The wife and I don't think it is to much work EXCEPT for tomatoes. Now I will admit they are a mess to prepare but all during the winter you think back and say to yourself it was worth it. And as far as fresh goes they are a heck of a lot better then that can or frozen stuff you get in your friendly grocery store and they are from America. How many of you harvest a deer or three and put them up for winter?, a little work yes but it is worth it and you can't buy it in a meat market. Now you city folks need to retire to the country where living is easy...
and if I do find one of those mason jars full of a clear liquid we can sit around and enjoy good living.
Does that mean you get your corn from a jar?!? I thought we only did that at Bluegrass Festivals nowadays!!! That good 'ole mountain dew will make you talk back to your mother and your mother-in-law . . . as well as put some hair on your chest, and I so dislike hairy chests!!
Mmmmm, I just love venison sausage . . . maybe Virginia and I will have to come pay you a visit!
*Hugs*

SL, with the price of gasoline I may be putting my liquid in the gas tank.
Now you'al come on over and I will throw some venison steaks on an open flame and believe it or not I got all the blue grass music you can handle.
Now if you want corn on the cob we have to pick some nice fresh ones, oh and be sure you an Virginia wear flats for pick'in as heels don't go to well out in the field.
On a side note I can't wait for school to start again as I can climb back into a dress all day. Funny thing when it's taken away just how much I miss it
Corn picked and eaten right in the cornfield is the best......and venison is delicious too although I only ate other people and my own roadkill (not recommended as a way to get venison....) Yes it was a lot of fun to do these things back in the day. Maybe when I retire.
