Should TS people be banned from adopting children?

Hopefully not. In an ideal world, a person's present or former gender or sexual orientation should not be a factor in whether or not they are fit to adopt children.

But some conservative groups would like the answer to be yes. The same sort of folks who tried the gay marriage poll manipulation have turned their eyes to TS people adopting children. Please feel free to vote...

There are some 'scary' articles on that site. It simply amazes me that in 2004 there are still people that can be that close-minded.

I suppose it should be expected from any site called "Traditonal Values", but I find it disgusting that there could be so many no votes.

Perhaps we should suggest another: "Should conservative, right wing, prejudiced people incapable of passing on to children the concepts of tolerance and respect for those different from themselves, be allowed to be parents or teachers"?

Yup, that's definitely a scary site (good comeback, Carolynn!). I checked out some of their other polls. This one I couldn't believe: out of close to 13,000 people, 60% voted that same-sex marriages performed up here in Canada shouldn't be legally recognized in the U.S. Huh? What? That's nonsense. Unless they're talking about American citizens coming up here to wed before returning to the U.S. But even then.

I find it a little disheartening how the political right is all for decentralization and a reduction of the role of government in the private lives of its citizens--except when it comes to sex and religion. What kind of double standard is this? What gives?

TG parents, for what they've gone through in their own lives, are apt to better impart notions of tolerance and respect for diversity than many of the more conservative folks out there. Sorry for the sweeping generalization, but the idea that we're unfit to be parents just makes runs and ladders spontaneously appear in my pantyhose! Grrrr!

I wish there were some device that would allow someone to spend even one day in another's shoes. Not that anyone at the Coalition for Traditional Values would want to come within five miles of such a contraption, though...

I agree that conservative bigots should have to walk a mile in our shoes. That would be nice.

I didn't go to the site because I'm already PO'd about enough stuff people are doing to us, but in reply to marilyn's comment, I'm sad to say there is such a person who occupies an office a few doors down the hall from the Oval Office who goes by the name Karl Rove.

To those bigots, that probably includes crossdressers too!

Of course they never ask who should adopt the transgendered children!

You know what happens to transgendered children? Their parents throw them out, and they end up living on the streets in places like Hollywood. There they learn to prostitute or to sell drugs.

Sheesh!

The world is not the cute little cardboard place some people think it is!

Who ( if anyone ) is "qualified" to be a parent. My SO and I read books and thought we were ready to have children. People, let me say this...NOBODY is ready to be a parent. It takes a life time of perseverence, patience, and love. I'm still learning... EVERYDAY!

There's no fool-proof method of raising children either. Each and every dear child is unique unto his or herself.

It is incomprehensible to judge whether or not ANYONE can be a good parent. I personally know very upstanding people who are terrible parents. I also know people who are irresponsible in many ways, yet have brought up wonderful children.
So if someone wants to adopt a child, my vote is "Good Luck, you're gonna need it" No sarcasm there, just plain truth. There are so many children out there who need a family. They need acceptance. They need to know they're loved. (Hmmm, kinda sounds like what I need. Being an outcast in society and all that hoopla :!: )
Mostly, I think, it boils down to love. Can you love someone? If so, then try raising a child. That's the real test. (dramatic pause.)

I was having a talk with someone today about having children. God Bless those who've had one or more, but I'm not ready. I can love, but I can also do a lot of worrying. I don't think I want to do that.

I don't want to take away from your post though. Very well said!
